Techniques

There are many variables we consider when we advise on construction. We’ve provided a basic framework for techniques below. Let’s chat about the big picture and we’ll guide the process.

hand knotted

Hand-knotting is a centuries-old art form of weaving that allows for intricate detail. Rugs are made on an upright loom; weavers meticulously tie individual knots around warp threads to create patterns and texture. Each knot is tied by hand with precision, the result bearing the hallmark of each artisan.

Variations:
Persian, Tibetan, Turkish, Moroccan, Sumac

hand loomed

This technique involves interweaving fiber on a loom that grips the warp threads and allows the fiber to move back and forth on a shuttle operated by hand or foot pedals. Each pass of the shuttle interlocks with the warp threads and forms the woven product. Hand loomed rugs are typically more simple for colors and repeats; we can create a myriad of effects from high-low piles, high lustered sheen and super smooth plush finishes.

Variations:
cut pile, loom pile, embossed

hand woven

Woven rugs are made by intertwining the weft yarn through the warp to create intricate patterns to simple designs to textural boucle. The fibers in the shuttle dance with the warps going from back to front.

Variations:
Flat-weave, Kilim, Dhurry

machine woven

This type of carpet is made on large electric looms where the weaving is done by machine. Axminster carpet is a popular machine woven used in the hospitality industry creating custom plush cut pile and incredibly durable carpet. Many natural fiber broadloom goods are machine woven too. A large yardage is needed to custom these goods.

Variations:
Axminster, Wilton, broadlooms

hand tufted

Carpets and rugs are made by using a tufting gun to punch a staple of yarn through a stretched canvas backing. The process creates heavy-weight and highly-durable rugs that can be made faster than many hand-mades. It allows for a lot of flexibility for pile finishes and customization.

Variations:
Cut, Loop, Carved, Sculpted, Tip Sheared

machine tufted

Similar to hand tufted but where the staples of yarn are inserted through a stretched backing by machine. Machine tufted allows for faster and lower cost production but usually requires a high quantity to customize. Most broadloom carpets are machine tufted or machine woven.

Variations:
broadloom, CYP, printed

Axminster

Axminster weaving allows for infinite color choices and detailed designs. Axminster carpets are made by creating carpet tufts of equal length before attaching them to the backing. This technique Requires a higher budget and longer lead-times compared to that of printed and greige goods. A large yardage is needed to custom these goods.

Printed & Greige Goods

these goods are typically machine tufted or machine woven, and the pattern and colors are applied through heat-injection and other highly technical methods that create durable and customizable goods.

MaterialS

We use a variety of material types, including: wool, silk, nylon, recycled plastic / performance fiber, natural fiber: sisal, jute, hemp, abaca; leather / Hides: Cowhide, sheepskin, mohair & yak — We'll work with you to select the right materials to suit both your design and budget.

Finishes

Fringe

Fringe is the warp foundation yarns that can be left on during knotted, woven and loomed production. it can be dyed or braided or woven extra long. to make hotel operations happy, we suggest trimming fringe to ¾” so it’s vacuum-friendly.

Hemmed

hemmed edges are a polished way to finish a woven rug to create just a bit more weight on the end to keep things LAYING and flat. A 2” hem is typical but going extra wide will add some nice drama.

Binding

Binding can be added to most rugs for a heavier finished feel. Options include canvas, jute, leather, faux leather and outdoor fabric. Binding a rug is a more expensive finish used frequently in residential work.

Surging

A surged finish is done by looping yarn around the rug edge to create a simple, clean look. Surging can be done by hand or machine, and often in either the same yarn as the goods themselves or in an accent fiber or color.

Carved

By creating simple shadows, bevels or intricate details, carving allows many opportunities to make a rug unique. It can be done on most dense cut piles, including machine tufted and Axminster. Additional costs will depend on the complexity of work.

ADA

Trip hazards are a big concern in hospitality FF&E. ADA shearing is possible on many types of handmade goods. Let’s discuss how to make sure we have this covered.

Common Questions

  • We are “to the trade only” which means you would need to have an interior designer or similar trade member initiating our talks and making the purchase.

  • Lead-times will vary based on the size of the rug, the construction and quantity, and then also if we can ship air freight or by sea.

On average for a basic 8 x 10 rug, it’s 12 – 14 weeks for hand knotted, 8 – 10 weeks for tufted and 8 weeks for woven. Air freight then adds about 7 – 10 business days; sea freight adds around 30 – 35 days.

  • If a project needs to go through a model review process and the rugs would likely be fully custom, we suggest connecting about 12 months in advance or more. That doesn’t mean we cannot expedite and figure out ways to move things along faster, but the design process and custom samples take time. We don’t like to cut corners, nor would we want to rush your internal and client review process. But keep in mind, we also have tons of running line goods and in stock rugs.

  • We have a hard time saying no, but we like to limit any custom order to a basic 8 x 10 rug, or 80 sq feet. There are some commercial carpet qualities like printed and Axminster that have larger yardage minimums too.

  • As much as we really want to make everyone’s dreams come true, we like to talk money early in the process so that we’re not creating more work for you (or us!) later down the road due to re-selections. Let’s have some honest talks about what you like and need, and we will tell you what it costs to get there and provide some VE options to keep in everyone’s back pocket.

  • Yes, come through! Our new Brooklyn showroom is open in the Sunset Park/Industry City area. We are ‘to the trade’ and appointment only. Please schedule a visit.

  • Samples and custom strike offs are a great way to see and feel the final product. There are always going to be dye lot and slight weave variations, especially with hand made goods, but we never recommend forgoing a sample or custom strike off. When lead-times are crazy tight, we have creative solutions to make production poms and hand samples for approval. Schedule an intro call to receive curated samples.

  • The heartbreaking reality is that our industry generates millions of pounds of landfill waste. To cut down on the increase in excess and disposable-minded thinking, we ask that any samples are returned. We charge a minimum fee FOR UNRETURNED SAMPLES to encourage a more tailored approach to what you request to borrow.

  • Roughly we’re looking at about 4 weeks to make a custom strike-off. Prior to that, CAD renderings (if needed) and color pom review will need to be done and approved. That process is usually about a week.

  • We use the ARS system for almost all our custom options and have an interactive 600-color case on this site to help begin design conversations.

Full POM cases are expensive, and we do not lend them out unless we have a large order in the works that will cover the costs should it go missing. Many design libraries have cases that cross over with the ARS system since it is now widely used by most custom rugs shops.

Reach out to let us know what you work with as there is a good change we can match it. We also remotely match Benjamin Moore paint chips and Pantones. We can also arrange a discounted purchase of a POM case should you want to keep one for eternity.

  • Yes, a part of our umbrella of services and experience is in creating branded lines for artists, stores and websites. We can work private-label or function as more of a branded partner. Let’s schedule a call to talk about your needs.

  • We’re serious about maintaining exclusivity with our clients; when we’re working on a custom project with you, we cannot make that rug again for anyone else. In that same regard, we won’t be able to copy a rug made by someone else unless we had their explicit written permission. But, have no fear, custom is our jam, and we’d love to work on something designed just for you.

  • Yes, at any time we usually have around 1,500 to 2,000 area rugs in our warehouse that range from small batch produced modern rugs to vintage and antiques. We’ve worked on tons of projects where vintage rugs need to be sourced, or a handful of brand-new rugs need to be installed within weeks.

  • We have warehouses in NYC, New Jersey, Maryland, Chicago and two in Florida. Most orders come into these warehouses, and we ship anywhere in the USA or abroad from there. We offer both commercial and residential installation services too.

  • When any rug or carpet is custom made-to-order, yarn is dyed on demand for each order, and due to the nature of that process, each time we dye the colors can be just slightly different. This is called dye lot variation. Size variations can also be expected when goods move from a loom or tufting frame through the finishing process as the tension changes and the washing process causes slight density changes. In general, natural size variations can be up to 6” +/- in either direction. Neither dye lot nor size variations are considered imperfections; it’s just a part of the process of making carpet and rugs.

  • Wool fiber is near and dear to us due to its renewable nature and inherent soil and fire-resistant properties, but we also work with pure silk, mohair, yak, hemp, jute, sisal, linen, abaca, bamboo silk, recycled PET plastic, nylon, leather and sheepskin.

  • Yes, pretty much. Rug pads not only offer more cushion underfoot and stop rugs from moving around, they also help protect the life of any carpet or rug by reducing the friction to the foundation and backing materials of any goods. Some of our more commercial products can be glued down directly or we can have a pad pre-attached to reduce the need to buy and install a carpet pad.
